DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES Downtown Los Angeles has been reputedly making a comeback for 25 years now, but the loft explosion over the past few years has made that notion seem truer than ever. There's lots of sightseeing to be done here, neighborhood landmarks include MOCA, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, ornate former movie palaces on Broadway, and the kitschy Mexican tourist attraction known as Olvera Street. There's also Chinatown—which is becoming an avant-garde multiculti art destination—and Little Tokyo.

A.O.C. This pan-Mediterranean wine and food bar, which specializes in small plates, is the baby of Lucques chef Suzanne Goin. Taste the rustic pâtés and the lamb skewers with Feta salsa verde, and you'll know that sample sizes suit her just fine. The room is sleek, the long bar welcoming, and the staff knowledgeable and friendly. There are about 50 wines by the glass and many more by the bottle, nearly all of them well chosen. It's hard to get a bad pour here—and harder still to get reservations. Those who do—upscale foodies and deal-makers—call weeks ahead, especially for Fridays and Saturdays.

ANGELINI OSTERINA Gino Angelini's sophisticated comfort-food restaurant is where other chefs go when they're off duty—Mario Batali, for instance, tends to drop by when he's in town. It's not that Angelini's menu is particularly nouveau or showy—, but his takes on ordinary-sounding dishes use the highest-quality ingredients and are somehow transcendentally delicious. The menu includes antipasti, thin-crust pizzas, pastas, salads, and roasted meats; his lasagna Nonna Elvira—layers of spinach pasta with béchamel, buffalo mozzarella and Bolognese sauce—is sheer perfection. Angelini also runs La Terza in the newly redecorated Orlando hotel on Third.
Closed Mondays.

ABBOTS PIZZA COMPANY With their delicate crusts and intriguing toppings—think Alfredo sauce, goat cheese, and portabella mushrooms—the pizzas at Abbot's are some of the best in the West. This bite-sized storefront's location—on the main drag in bohemian Venice—is an added bonus. Inside, rock music blasts from speakers, and convertibles, bicycles, and "Peace and Love" are advertised on a bulletin board. You can sit among the tattooed and pierced customers at a stainless-steel counter, but takeout is the big thing here. And why not, when Venice Beach beckons?

GREEN DOOR Don't look for a sign; just a weathered green door marks the spot (a ploy to keep the Hollywood tourists out and the cool kids in). If you don't have some kind of connection, be sure to get there on the early side (9-ish) for a chance at making it past the velvet rope. Or make dinner reservations (the menu offers upscale Frenchy bistro fare such as truffled mac 'n' cheese, steak frites, and crêpes) then stay on for drinks. The plush lounge is tricked out like a turn-of-the-century Parisian coffee house with crystal chandeliers, enormous gilded mirrors, and chic fashionistas perched on red-velvet fainting couches. For a truly Left Bank experience you can even light up a cigarette—not an easy proposal in L.A.—thanks to the air vents in the front smoking patio.
Open Tuesdays through Saturdays 7:30 pm to 2 am.

AKASHA Helmed by entertainment-biz caterer Akasha Richmond, this eco-friendly restaurant, bar, and bakery in Culver City serves healthy, surprisingly tasty, organic grub to members of L.A.'s growing green scene. Inside, the construction is sustainable, the appliances are energy-efficient, and the servers wear organic cotton T-shirts and Levi's Eco jeans. Standout entrées range from an earthy bowl of Punjabi Mung beans to a hearty slab of flatiron steak paired with organic fries. Belly up to the bar with the rest of the eco mafia for a signature cocktail mixed with organic lemon vodka, or order earth-conscious takeout from the counter: The containers are all biodegradable, and the cutlery is made from wheat.
Restaurant open Mondays through Thursdays 11:30 am to 2:30 pm and 5:30 to 10 pm, Fridays and Saturdays 11:30 am to 2:30 pm and 5:30 to 11 pm, and Sundays 5 to 9 pm. Bakery open Mondays through Fridays 8 am to 5:30 pm, Saturdays 9 am to 5:30 pm.

ANIMAL This unassuming little spot, nestled between scruffy delis and bagel bakeries in the heart of L.A.'s kosher district, is full of pleasant surprises. For starters, there's the restaurant's all-out reverence for pork—think buttery braised pork shoulder or balsamic-glazed ribs—which even extends to a delicious chocolate crunch dessert topped off with crumbled bacon. Then there's the fact that this no-frills spot, with its wooden tables and apron-wearing bartender, just might be one of the few restaurants in L.A. where you'll find top-rate food served without a hint of attitude or fuss. Adventurous, delicious dishes include mustard-crusted sweetbreads; braised rabbit served on beans, carrots, and fennel; and poutine (french fries smothered in oxtail gravy and Vermont cheddar). Thanks to sommelier Erik Kelley, the wine selection is well edited and reasonably priced. But you're welcome to bring your own for a small corkage fee.
Open Sundays through Thursdays 6 to 11 pm, Fridays and Saturdays 6 pm to 2 am.

APPLE PAN Feeling nostalgic for a time gone by (and the low prices that went with it)? Head to this white clapboard shack, opened in 1947 and now surrounded by boxy storefronts that seem about to swallow it whole. Inside, wood paneling and red-and-white plaid wallpaper flank 26 counter seats, for which devoted fans are happy to wait. The rewards are ample, including steak burgers piled high with fixings (everything you'd expect, minus the tomato—they don't like them here) and hickory burgers drenched in barbecue sauce. Whatever you do, save room for the gooey homemade pie.
Closed Mondays.

AHMANSON THEATRE & MARK TAPER FORUM The 2,000-seat Ahmanson Theatre and 750-seat Mark Taper Forum are two of L.A.'s most important performing venues. Both are affiliated with the Center Theatre Group. The Ahmanson has featured everything from the ballets of Matthew Bourne to restoration comedies to avant-garde productions by Robert Wilson. The smaller Mark Taper Forum has a thrust stage that's surrounded by audience on three sides, and specializes in more experimental work.

BEACHES The Beach Boys weren't lying: this part of California is all about the sun, sand, and surf. Venice Beach, with its street performers, outdoor cafés, and pedestrian traffic, still has that quintessential Californian combination of liveliness and laid-backness. You can grab a bike at one of the many rental stands; there's a bike path that heads all the way south to Redondo Beach. Santa Monica has Surfrider Beach, one of the best breaks long the coast, and also a pier with an amusement park that's lots of fun for kids. Malibu is a bit on the impenetrable side (a wall of houses lines the beach), but just up the Pacific Coast Highway at Zuma Beach there's plenty of parking and lots of sand. Walk north, and you'll pass the celebrity-owned houses of Broad Beach. Drive a bit farther up the Pacific Coast Highway and you'll find Neptune's Net, the famed fish-shack with a parking lot full of motorcycles.

BEVERLY HILLS Beverly Hills is famous for the designer-driven shops of Rodeo Drive and the Golden Triangle, and the recent upsurge of teardowns in favor of mega-mansions. It's a great place for strolling and window-shopping (if you can't afford the stores), and there's excellent people-watching to be had from the many sidewalk cafés. Landmarks include City Hall and the Post Office, as well as the I.M. Pei–designed Creative Artists Agency (CAA). The well-manicured public gardens along Santa Monica Boulevard are a lovely oasis, as well as a popular place to jog.

BAR DELUX Just in case the gilded chandeliers, mahogany wood paneling, and swooping velvet drapes didn't give it away, the Silent Era of the 1920s was the inspiration behind Bar Delux, the whisky-centric watering hole from nightlife vet Adolfo Suaya. A massive emerald stained-glass Art Deco mural above the marble bar evokes Old Hollywood at its most glamorous, as does the lipstick-red ladies' lounge upstairs. Seating is scarce after 11 pm, when a polished crowd (half artsy/half industry) fills the room. And don't even think about making it past the ironclad door on Thursdays, when L.A.'s hottest club promoters, the Alliance, run the show. On Fridays and Saturdays, the trick is to score a dinner reservation—we recommend the whisky-glazed pork belly and the pretzel-bread Reuben—then order a Flapper Jack, a heady concoction of 100-proof applejack, cranberry juice, fresh lemon juice, and blackberries, and stay for the late-night scene.
Open Thursdays through Saturdays 8 pm to 2 am.

STARBUCKS COFFEE whats anyplace without a Starbucks coffee shop. the frappuccinos and ice coffees are addictive and the pastries are delicious.
DECADES This fabulous vintage couture shop has supplied red-carpet gowns for the likes of Cameron Diaz, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, and Sheryl Crow. The designers represented here are the best of the best: Yves Saint Laurent, Emilio Pucci, Andre Courreges. Downstairs is Decadestwo, where designer ready-to-wear—including Prada, Marni, and John Galliano—runs just over half retail price.
Closed Sundays.

FRED SEGAL This infamous shop—it's as well-known for its celebrity sightings as it is for its exclusive merchandise—is like a collection of different boutiques under one roof. You can shelter-shop, check out the latest handbags and shoes, and buy men's, women's, and children's clothing—and know that you're getting only the coolest and most luxurious brands. It's one of the best best-edited stores in the United States. There's a second Fred Segal shop in Santa Monica.

ECCO You might recognize this place from its 15 minutes of fame on the Discovery Channel's Alter Eco. The show documented the nightclub's transformation from a slick Hollywood hangout into the first L.A. club with LEED certification, the ultimate eco credential. Constructed almost entirely out of recycled and renewable materials, the spacious dance club features plenty of energy-efficient perks, like a multicolored LED lighting system, a Turbosound system that's just as loud as a regular sound system but uses less power, organic vodka distilled through coconut shells rather than coal, and—go figure—waterless urinals. But don't expect this place's good intentions to be reflected by a worthy crowd—you'll pretty much find the same skinny-jean-wearing Hollywood scenesters you'd see at any other Cahuenga Corridor joint. While you're still going to have to shell out for bottle service for the right to sit down, at least valet is free for hybrid cars. Those in the know don't bother showing before 11 pm, when the DJ really gets going, spinning a mix of electro house with a splash of trance.

SANTA MONICA MOUNTAIN BLUFFS Nobody walks in L.A., but they do hike. There are great trails along the Santa Monica Mountain bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the forested Angeles Crest. Or you can head uphill into Hollywood's Runyon Canyon, where somewhat disheveled celebrities can often be glimpsed walking their dogs off-leash. In Beverly Hills, there's Franklin Canyon. For information and maps of these and other trails.

ITS A WRAP - PRODUCTION WARDROBE Clothes worn on television and film shoots are available here. One day this place will have nothing of any earthly interest; the next, there will be a designer suit (perhaps worn once on Guiding Light or As the World Turns) at a fraction of the retail price. It helps to be a small size, since these clothes were fitted for flab-free actors.

PLANET BLUE Located in Malibu's quaint Country Mart, Planet Blue is considered a must stop for well-to-do beach bunnies and just about all of young Hollywood. From yacht-friendly flip-flops and casual designer threads (Ella Moss, Diane von Furstenberg, and Velvet) to the latest denim brands, this place is a trusted purveyor of laidback luxury. Don't miss the beauty emporium next door, where shelves are stocked with every high-end line imaginable—from Mario Badescu skincare to Cor's famous silver soaps—plus a few cool boutique brands you can't find anywhere else. For those who don't feel like trekking all the way out to the flagship in Malibu, there are now Blue outposts in Santa Monica, Venice, and Beverly Hills.

AKBAR This Moroccan-themed bar on the border of Hollywood and Silver Lake attracts a mixed crowd of casually dressed gays and straights. Often supercrowded, it can get downright suffocating on weekends. There's a great jukebox, with everything from '90s rock to Frank Sinatra, comfortable seating in the lounge behind the bar, and very stiff drinks. Regular themed party nights include Craft Night, where art supplies are provided for people to carve pumpkins, make finger puppets, and color outside the lines while getting soused.
